New trips

3 August, 2008 - Four new itineraries in Ladakh, Northern India

Prayer flags and mountains of Ladakh Colourful Ladakhi women Ladakhi monks admire the view

Ladakh is a much forgotten land of mountains, monasteries and great heritage and culture. This north western most province of India is geographically an extension of the high Tibetan plateau, situated between the great ranges of the Karakoram and Himalaya. Ladakh, or "Little Tibet" as it's known, means "The land of high passes", and so not surprisingly provides many opportunities for outdoor adventure and trekking of all levels. The landscape is stunning, with mountains that have an array of colour, with vivid stripes of turquoise, green, red, purple and tans.

The capital Leh lies in the Indus Valley, surrounded by the 3 smaller mountainous ranges of Stok, Ladakh and Zanskar. The local people - Ladakhis - are Buddhists, and are some of the most hospitable people you may come across. With a rich cultural heritage of the Namgyal Dynasty, who still reign the Ladakh Kingdom, the area also has many palaces and monasteries to visit. The combination of rich cultural heritage and history as well as an amazing physical landscape, makes Ladakh a luring destination for any traveller. Snow Leopard Trails

Snow leopard

This trip takes you in search of the mountain wildlife and especially the most elusive of Himalayan mammals - the snow leopard. After arriving in Kathmandu, we swiftly move west towards the Annapurna range of the Himalaya which is home to one of the largest populations of snow leopard in central Asia. We spend the next 6 days trekking into the remote location of Braka from where our quest to find the snow leopard begins. Your guides are local to this specific area of the mountains, living and observing the wildlife constantly, and so you will have the best support team possible. After following the trails in search of the magnificent snow leopard and the endangered blue sheep on which they prey, you continue on the trails continuing to watch for the Himalayan wildlife, including griffin vulture and lammergeier.

Langtang

Langtang Base and Tilman's Pass

A brand new trek off the beaten track. Langtang, the nearest of the Himalayan parks to Kathmandu, is a beautiful area rich in culture and nature. As well as the two trips already included, we shall be offering a trek to the base of Langtang and Tilman's Pass, reaching well over 5000m with around 20 days of trekking. If you are looking for something completely new then please ask us about this trek.

Trekking peaks

Stok Kangri

We shall be offering a new trekking peak each year. These will vary greatly in technical difficulty. For example Mera is the highest trekking peak at 6476m, but has little technical skill requirements. It is therefore a popular first climb for those who have experience at altitude. Paldor or Pisang, however, do require ice axe, crampon and rope skills, and so are more technical climbs. Look out for NMA (Nepal Mountaineeriing Association) peaks across the country such as: Island Peak in Sagarmatha,, Paldor in the Langtang region, Pisang in the Annapurna and others further a field, such as Stok Kangri in Ladakh coming soon.
